What happens in the classes?

The sessions are non-competitive and no sparring takes place, instead the focus is on learning realistic self protection skills. Each class involves some partner work as well as group work, on learning such techniques as:

• learning how to fall safely - rolling and break falling (ukemi)
• body evasion movements (tai sabaki)
• striking, kicking & blocking (dakentaijutsu, koppojutsu, etc)
• throwing & grappling (nage & jutaijutsu)
• locks & controls (gyakute waza)
• escapes from holds & locks/throws (hajutsu)

Ninpo is based on natural ways of moving your body, and does not rely on strength, fitness or aggression to make it work. Whether you are young or old, male or female, it will work for you, it just takes training.
Children will also learn via role play scenarios how to effectively deal with verbal and physical bullying, deceptive and tricky people, and inappropriate touch. Other objectives are to highlight the importance of basic instinct and learning to respect other peoples boundaries as well as strengthening their own. Children will also understand that techniques are a last resort as there are other more effective alternatives to surviving potentially dangerous situations.
Myojo Dojo incorporates extensive research carried out into the psychology, techniques and tactics of people that harm children into the classes.

Life Enhancing Benefits:

We aim to give children something more than just how to kick and punch. The values and underlying moral structure are also important to complement and balance the physical side of training. We teach a Martial Art, not a sport! An emphasis on character building and the value of a positive attitude is nurtured, for the first step to solving problems.
